As a global network for women in electronic music, female:pressure has focused on connecting artists, labels, bookers, curators, event organisers and other stakeholders. Active since 1998, we have intensified our efforts over the past several years with the objective of increasing the visibility of women in the field and creating new opportunities. And we know first-hand from our ongoing tracking of local and international events that the underrepresentation of women at major electronic music festivals and other publicly funded events persists to this day – the presence of female artists accounts for only ten percent, according to our observations.
Not enough women in electronic music? We have proven that this is hardly the case. Our first Perspectives Festival took place in 2013, providing a platform for discussing and debating the underlying causes and dynamics of this imbalance and breaking the topic wide open.
But the dialogue does not stop there. Perspectives 2015 continues to examine the challenges faced by women in a male-dominated scene, explore important gender and music-related issues, and stage showcases of outstanding female DJs, VJs and live performers.
There is a multiplier effect in what we do. We are in touch with other networks – connecting networks to networks, strengthening our connections, expanding our resources and building up the mutual support behind our aim.
